Critical infrastructure

KliGAS Infra

Identifying flood risks for electricity, water and gas networks early.

Supply infrastructure

Initial situation

Currently, energis-Netzgesellschaft, the largest regional utility, has no risk assessment of its supply infrastructure with regard to heavy rainfall and flood events. For events such as the Pentecost flood, the response has so far been to damage after it occurs. In future, improved operating procedures and flood/heavy rainfall precautions are intended to increase supply security for citizens.

Approach

KoK² at htw saar is currently using 2D surface runoff models to simulate different heavy rainfall scenarios in Saarland and thus determines water depths, flow velocities and flooded areas. The aim of this project is to use the model results to identify flood risks for critical points in selected areas supplied by energis-Netzgesellschaft in the electricity, water and gas networks.
